Counterculture and Design

Countercultures challenge the norm and usually have strong, opposing ideas and attitudes towards the current trends. They never last a long length of time, either burning out or becoming the norm as people catch onto their ideas. Countercultures attract some of the most ‘creative and innovative thinkers’, mobilising the youth, with the most powerful ones defining generations. Many would think that ‘Hipsters’ are counted as a counterculture, but they have no strong emotional expressions and are strongly based around fashion and music trends. Their fashion trend is unidentifiable, with some people describing it as homeless and others as trendy. It has also developed into a very main-stream trend and a large majority of youths could be described as a hipster, but would never define themselves as one, being the first counterculture to not self identify. It is a ‘culture’ which is hard to define as they do not pride themselves in having any strong common views or opinions.
